As part of activities marking the International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies 2025, the Breathe Nairobi Initiative facilitated a community clean-up in Mathare, bringing together residents and government representatives in a powerful show of collaboration for a healthier environment.
A collaborative effort
The clean-up attracted 57 participants, including Nairobi County environmental officers, local community members, and volunteers. The day began with an interactive training session to better understand community waste disposal practices and to address common misconceptions, such as the harmful practice of burning waste and the risks associated with reusing plastics.
The training provided practical solutions for households, sparking discussion around innovative support models such as Community Health Promoters (CHPs), who could play a role in guiding families on sustainable waste practices.
County leadership and ongoing initiatives
Representatives from Nairobi City County used the event to highlight wider efforts already underway to transform waste management and tackle air pollution. These include the establishment of recycling plants in areas such as Kiamaiko, and training programmes on composting, urban farming, and recycling.
County officials also emphasised the health consequences of poor waste management and the wider benefits of embracing a circular economy, noting that improved practices at the community level can help reduce air pollution and support household livelihoods.
Positive reception from the community
Participants welcomed the initiative, expressing their appreciation for the chance to learn and contribute directly to a cleaner, healthier neighbourhood. The exercise not only improved the immediate environment but also helped foster long-term behavioural change by equipping households with knowledge and tools to act against pollution.
The collaborative spirit of the clean-up underscored the importance of sustained partnerships between local communities, government, and initiatives such as Breathe Cities.
Together for clean air
By combining awareness, training, and practical action, the Mathare clean-up showed that even small-scale interventions can create lasting impact. Nairobi’s journey towards cleaner air relies on both policy-level interventions and community ownership of solutions.
The Breathe Nairobi Initiative extends its gratitude to the Nairobi City County Government and all participants for their commitment to improving air quality. Together, we continue to build momentum towards a future where every resident can breathe clean, safe air.
